Led by renowned filmmaker Nawaf Al Janahi since 2014, Black Box Cinema has screened in the past 5 editions a total of 84 narrative and documentary short films to more than 8,330 viewers, and achieved a physical reach to more than 44,000 people. As one of the most attended film showcases in the UAE, it is now less than 7 days away from the film submissions deadline for the 6th edition, which will take place at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.
The call is for all films that are either Arab productions or directed by Arab directors, and the submission deadline is on 6 January 2023. The films must be in short format, documentary, narrative and experimental shorts are welcomed, and if in a language other than English, must feature English subtitles.
Some of the films presented in previous editions include the Oscar-nominated short Ave Maria by Basil Khalil, Feathers of the Birds by Sudanese filmmaker Amjad Abu Alala, Sabeel by Emirati helmer Khalid Al Mahmood, Tala'vision by Jordanian born director Murad Abu Eisheh, and The Watermelon by legendary Egyptian-British film director Mohamed Khan.
Full houses are frequent at Black Box Cinema, with new and returning viewers from different ages and nationalities and Black Box Cinema is where different audiences come closer to the short films of Arab cinema.
