Mohamed Diab's 'Moon Knight' nabs 8 Emmy nominations

It was a good day for Disney+ with their 3 Marvel series scoring a total of 16 nominations. In order to be eligible, all three shows, Moon Knight, Hawkeye and Loki aired from 1st June 2021 to end of May 2022.

Moon Knight came out on top in nominations with a total of 8. These are: best sound editing for a limited or anthology series, movie or special; best fantasy/sci-fi costumes; best music composition for a limited or anthology series, movie or special (original dramatic score); best character voice-over performance (F. Murrray Abraham as Khonshu); best sound editing for a limited or anthology series, movie or special; best sound mixing for a limited or anthology series or movie; best stunt coordination for a drama series, limited or anthology series or movie; and best stunt performance.

Obvious snubs included star Oscar Isaac, whose portrayal of Marc Spector slash Steven Grant has been hailed by fans and critics alike. And of course, the show's executive producer and helmer Mohamed Diab.

These slights won't help the series, whose future for a second season remains uncertain. There was the introduction -- spoiler alert!! -- of a third identity for Isaac's character(s) at the end of season 1, which leaves the door open for a next installation. However, the ultimate decision depends on both Isaac, who seems weary of wearing the "golden handcuffs" of Marvel longterm -- meaning the concept of seeing a Marvel character through to several films and seasons -- and Marvel president Kevin Feige.

But at least, some of the amazing, groundbreaking work on Moon Knight is being recognized. They did put Egypt on the map for all the right reasons and I am crushing on Layla El-Faouly, played by Bahraini-born, Egyptian-Palestinian actress May Calamawy, who is finally unveiled as Scarlet Scarab in the show's finale. That is representation right there and the character is played by an Arab actress which is double the fabulous.

So fingers crossed for wins in all categories where they are nominated. The Emmy Awards will be announced during a televised ceremony on September 12th, 2022 at 5:00 PM US PT.
